Definitions

Problem Based Learning - "a methodology that engages students in the active pursuit of data to accurately solve problems" (Niemer, Pfendt, Gers, 2010,p.61).

Problem Based Learning - " a method and philosophy involving problem-first learning via work in small groups and independent study" (Koh, Khoo, Wong, Koh, 2008, p.34).

Problem Based Learning - " to challenge one's understanding of a phenomenon and to motivate one to explore possible answers" (Yoe, 2007,p.875).

Problems can be defined in different ways:
  • Well-defined problems -goal clearly stated, information available to solve, only one right answer.
  • Ill-defined problems - goal not clearly stated, necessary information to solve problem is not available, no guaranteed sequence of operation for solving, and several possible solutions exist.  (Ormrod, 2008).
